Hands-on high tunnel construction workshop.
Hands-on high tunnel construction workshop this month in Wheatland.
Those wanting a high tunnel to extend their growing season can learn how to build
one in a hands-on workshop in Wheatland.
The workshop is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, to Friday, May 17, at the Wheatland
Middle School Campus, 2600 West Mariposa Parkway. Participants will learn how to
construct a high tunnel using locally available materials and discuss techniques
to extend the growing season. “High tunnels or hoop houses can be incorporated into
your gardening and cropping practices as a means to extend the growing season and
increase specialty crop production – even in Wyoming,” said Jeff Edwards University
of Wyoming Extension educator who is conducting the workshop.
Students will use the high tunnel for educational purposes, said Edwards. Almost
500 participants have built more than 50 high tunnels across Wyoming since the hands-on,
educational workshops began.
Reservations are recommended by May 13. Edwards suggested those who plan to attend
to dress appropriately for outdoor work and that painting and working with lumber
and tools is expected.
