One of the biggest jobs the County Treasurer is responsible for is vehicle registrations. Below you will find information about types of registrations, how registrations are calculated, and documents needed for different registrations.
Registration Fees
Prices for registrations are determined by Wyoming State Statutes, so a vehicle will cost the same amount to register regardless of where in Wyoming the registration is issued. However, the county that collects the registration fees is responsible for distributing the money to other parts of the county. Registration fees are broken down into two parts: County fee and State Fee.
County fees are calculated using the formula below:

(Factory Price) X (Year of Service Rate) X (.03) = County Fee
The factory price of a vehicle equals 90% of the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price). MSRPs can usually be found by contacting the manufacturer, the dealership the vehicle was purchased from, by calling the County Clerk or Treasurer's office, or by other online vehicle valuation sites.
The year of service rate is determined as follows:
- 1st year: 60%
- 2nd year: 50%
- 3rd year: 40%
- 4th year: 30%
- 5th year: 20%
- 6th year and above: 15%
For example: A new vehicle is in its first year of service so it is taxed at a rate of 60% whereas a used vehicle in its second year of service would be taxed at a rate of 50%, and so on. The calculation for a used vehicle in its third year of service with a factory price of $20,000 would be:

The state fee depends on the vehicle type:
- Passenger Vehicles = $15.00
- Trucks & trailers = $2.00 - $60.00 depending on weight (see below)
- Motorcycles = $12.00
- Commercial Vehicles = $80.00 - $1,400.00 depending on weight

What to bring....
To Renew Your Registration:
- Registration renewal card or previous registration
- Proof of insurance
- For commercial vehicles over 55,000 pounds, please also bring a copy of a current IRS 2290 form
- If you are military claiming non-resident, you will need your current end of month Leave and Earning Statement and military identification card

To Get a New Registration:
- Copy of your Wyoming title *or* if registered in another state, a copy of the current registration
- Copy of dealer's invoice if the vehicle is a new purchase
- Proof of insurance
- For commercial vehicles over 55,000 pounds, a copy of your current IRS 2290 form is needed
- For leased vehicles, you will need proof of sales tax being paid, usually on the lease contract. The contract must contain:
- Year
- Make
- VIN
- Sales tax license number
- Percentage of sales tax being collected
- If you are military claiming non-resident, you will need your current end of month Leave and Earning Statement and military identification card
To Register a Trailer:
Trailers are exempt from the proof of insurance requirement. To register a trailer, the Treasurer's office must have a weight slip. If the trailer is over 1,000 pounds, a copy of the Wyoming title is required in addition to the weight slip.
To Register a Boat:
Boat registrations in the State of Wyoming are handled by the Wyoming Game & Fish Department. The County Treasurer does register boat trailers, so see the section above for information about registering a boat trailer. Even though the County Treasurer does not register boats, we still collect sales tax on boat and boat trailer purchases if sales tax was not paid at the time of purchase. You will need proof of sales tax paid before the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will register your boat.
Temporary Registrations
Any person may receive one (1) temporary registration for 30, 60 or 90 days for one of two reasons:
- You are a non-resident temporarily employed in Wyoming
- Must provide a current out-of-state registration
- Must provide proof of insurance
- A newly acquired vehicle
- Temporary registrations are only issued for this reason if the grace period (45 days) has ended and you are having trouble getting adequate title paperwork from the sellers
- Must have a notarized Bill of Sale or a copy of the dealer's invoice
- Must pay sales tax before the temporary is issued
- Must provide proof of insurance
Temporary registrations can only be issued once. After a temporary registration expires, the vehicle owner must get a regular registration to continue to drive the vehicle.
